The Books That Shape Us: Two Black Women Authors Who Guide MGL’s Vision
At Mindful Girl Love, we are led by the words of Black women authors. They remind us that dating — especially as queer women and femmes — can be healing, not harmful.
Our vision isn’t built on swipes and surface vibes. It’s built on emotional safety, energy alignment, and reflection. You’ll find that truth in every blog, event, and moment we create.
As we prepare for our Juneteenth Gathering at Head House Books in Philadelphia, we honor two writers whose voices ground the soul of MGL.
Alice Walker – In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens
Alice Walker’s essays don’t just speak — they breathe. In this timeless collection, she explores the creative legacy of Black women — our love, our resistance, our artistry. She reminds us that we are living extensions of our ancestors’ dreams, and that dating, at its best, is spiritual labor. We’re not just meeting people; we’re tending to inherited gardens, choosing to bloom with care.
At MGL, every connection is an act of generational healing. We’re here to water growth, not wounds. Walker’s writing helps us remember that love can be a ritual of restoration.
Brittney Cooper – Eloquent Rage
Learn more about Brittney Cooper
In Eloquent Rage, Brittney Cooper gives voice to the fire many of us carry — the rage of being unheard, overlooked, and underestimated. She reframes Black women’s anger not as a flaw, but as a force. A truth-teller. A boundary-setter. A deep, unrelenting form of self-love.
This message is home for us. At MGL, we’re creating a space where softness and power coexist — a space for queer Black women and femmes who are done shrinking. Cooper reminds us that rage and tenderness are not opposites, but companions in the journey to wholeness.
Mindful Dating as Liberation
As Juneteenth approaches, we reflect not just on emancipation from the past — but on the freedom we still seek in our relationships today. Mindful dating is a radical act of reclamation. For Black LGBTQ+ women, it is a tool of healing — a way to choose love that uplifts, connections that affirm, and a community that sees us.
This blog is part of our lead-up to the Mindful Girl Love Juneteenth Gathering at Head House Books — an evening of joy, grounding, and reflection. Our curated book table will feature In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens and Eloquent Rage, not just for reading but for liberation.

Let these books remind you — as they’ve reminded us — that to love with intention, to date mindfully, and to show up whole is revolutionary.
